The global punnet market is poised for significant transformation between 2025 and 2035, driven by sweeping changes in sustainability preferences, material innovation, and consumer expectations for fresh, eco-friendly packaged goods. Projected to grow from USD 1,215 million in 2025 to USD 2,018 million by 2035, the market will register a CAGR of 5.2% over the decade.
This decade-long growth story is not just about numbers. It reflects a broader transformation in how we produce, distribute, and consume perishable goods, underlining the pivotal role punnets play in the food packaging ecosystem.
A punnet is a small container traditionally made from plastic or wood pulp, often used to pack soft or delicate food items like berries, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, and cheese. They are designed to minimize damage during transport, improve shelf visibility, and offer convenience for both retailers and consumers.

Modern punnets have evolved from single-use plastics to incorporate eco-friendly materials such as recycled PET, cardboard, molded pulp, and biodegradable bioplastics. These sustainable innovations are helping meet the growing global call for reduced plastic waste and a greener packaging footprint.
Plastic Is the Problem We Keep Ignoring
Plastic punnets dominate. They’re cheap, light, transparent, and they work. But let’s not kid ourselves, most of this plastic does not get recycled. It ends up in landfills, oceans, and incinerators. In 2022, plastic held the largest share of punnet packaging sales, and FMI sees no sign of that changing.
That’s a staggering reality in an era of climate urgency.
It’s not that we lack alternatives. Molded fiber, pulp, and paper-based punnets are gaining ground. But they’re more expensive to produce. And without regulation or pressure from big retailers, manufacturers will always take the path of least resistance.
The U.S. seems perfectly fine with that. France? They’ve already banned plastic packaging for many fruits and vegetables. India? Tightening material standards. Meanwhile, the U.S. keeps talking about circular economy goals while clinging to clamshells like it’s still 1999.
Innovation Without Accountability Means Nothing
Don’t get fooled by buzzwords. “Recyclable” doesn’t mean “recycled.” PET punnets, widely used across the U.S., are recyclable in theory. But in reality, our recycling systems can’t handle them efficiently. Many get rejected, tossed, or contaminated.
Retailers are happy to slap “eco-friendly” labels on these products, but where’s the follow-through?
FMI’s forecast is bullish, and rightly so, punnet demand is skyrocketing. North America’s hunger for pre-packed produce, ready meals, and grocery e-commerce is fueling that fire. But innovation without accountability is just greenwashing. And we’ve seen enough of that.
This Isn’t Just a Supply Chain Story. It’s a Climate Story.
Let’s zoom out. Every punnet that extends a fruit’s shelf life also adds to our fossil-fuel footprint unless it’s made from compostable or recycled materials. Yet, in the U.S., compostable options remain niche. Why? Because they cost more, and there’s no policy forcing anyone to do better.
Retailers like to talk sustainability in press releases. But when it comes to actual procurement decisions, the lowest price wins. Every time.
If this continues, the U.S. will soon find itself overwhelmed not just by produce, but by the packaging it’s wrapped in.
Where We Must Go From Here
- Regulate the materials. We can’t wait for voluntary changes. Plastic bans on select punnet applications, like France has done, must be part of the U.S. conversation.
- Fund real infrastructure. Recycling PET is useless if facilities can’t handle it. Molded fiber isn’t scalable unless we invest.
- Retailers must lead, not follow. Grocers and produce brands are the gatekeepers. They have the power to shift markets overnight.

Competitive Landscape
The punnet market is a competitive field, with huge multinationals and local players driving growth. There are certain big players with a large market share who control the market with innovative packing techniques, eco-friendly materials, and economical designs.
These companies excel at sustainable production, extending shelf life, and accommodating a wide range of fresh fruit packaging needs, such as berries, tomatoes, and grapes. The market is made up of both established producers and new entrants, each of whom shapes market trends through unique product offerings and developments.
