As the efforts to solve the global food waste problem are gaining momentum, new technologies are also being developed to tackle the problem. The most important aspect of food waste management is proper storage of food. Hence, Rebound Technologies, a startup firm has developed a technology known as IcePoint. This new technology is expected to decrease 1.3 billion tons of food wasted every year. The technology is the first major innovation in refrigeration. The facility using two IcePoint units is also expected to decrease GHG emission by 23,000 tons and will also be able to save 14 billion gallons of water each year.
Greenbelt Resources Corporation has also been recommended by Indonesian government’s technical committee for Eco-friendly registration of its ECOsystem technology, a waste-to-energy system. This registration will allow the company to use the country’s Ecolabel logo. ECOsystem can convert food waste into useful products such as potable water, bioenergy and high protein food source.
Cutting-edge technologies to minimize food waste
Technologies to help tackle food waste have been on the rise. InSinkErator is another company that has developed the latest technology known as Grid2Energy, captures food waste and turns it into a slurry. While creating heat or compressed gas and electricity. The waste food is transferred into a holding tank and then transported to various facilities to turn it into a renewable energy.
A number of technologies are emerging offering better food waste management opportunities. For instance, Whirlpool at CES 2017 introduced its Zera Home Recycler as the speedy home food recycling system. The machine takes any kind of food waste and within 24 hours premium fertilizer is produced. Thus recycling food waste into nutrient-rich compost. According to the company, on an average 400 pounds of food waste is created per year and Zara Home Recycler can recycle around 95% of that food waste.
Various companies are also developing onsite technologies to deal with the problem of food waste. Digesters are one of the technologies that help generators to tackle food waste onsite. For instance, LeanPath provides a tool that measures food waste on daily basis, resulting in food waste prevention. It provides two tools one is LeanPath 360 System, which is for high-volume operations such as big hotels, schools, colleges. Another is LeanPath Zap for mid-size operations such as small restaurants, coffee shops, etc. it uses cloud-based analytics tools and a sensor-based system to analyze data on food waste.
However, companies are still developing new products that are set to revolutionize food industry and food waste management.
