Types of Label Applicators: Standalone has Highest Demand in the Global Market

Applying labels is one of the important part of a business to define the product in terms of components, price, etc. Over the years, the label applicators have evolved in many ways due to the advancement of digital technology. Label applicators are used to apply pressure-sensitive labels directly to bottles, containers, packages, or drums of the products. The label applicators are loaded with rolls of labels and applied to the products. They can used for different application or on different parts of the product container including top, side, bottom, front/back, wrap, corner wrap, loose loop, etc. These could be either pre-printed labels or information printed directly on the label.

Types of Label Applicators

There are three main types of label applicators depending on the two application: apply-only or print & apply.

Integrated Automated Label Applicators

Automatic label applicators are also known as ‘Turnkey System’ as they are fully integrated and pre-built to the product handling system. In this label applicator, the labeling system can be either in-line or off-line mode of operation. In the former one, the product is fed automatically to machine for labelling while in off-line mode, the product is placed and removed manually from the machine. Advantages of integrated automated label applicators include accuracy of label on product placement, easier change over, and product throughput capability. However, automatic label applicators take up more space and are more expensive than other label applicators.

Semi-Automatic Label Applicators

In this machine, an operator manually places the product into a jig assembly where the label is applied using either a controlled foot pedal or photo-electric sensor present in the fixture. Semi-automatic label applicators are more accurate and faster than hand labelling. They are not only cost effective but also portable and do not take up much space. Although semi-automatic label applicators have slower throughput than the automatic ones, they guarantee accurate labelling on product placement and use single source for product and label control.

Standalone Label Applicators

This type of label applicators uses a labeler with an existing or third party product handling system. Standalone label applicators may include a portable head mount and are easiest to install. They are usually the most cost effective solution, absolutely flexible, and takes up least floor space. However, standalone label applicators do not maintain product control nor application accuracy. Changeover of products may take longer as compared to other types of label applicators.
