Complications Associated with Surgery and Adverse Post-surgical Effects Pull Down Pelvic Implant Sales

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI) are among the most common female health conditions, and as per the recent statistics presented by APOPS (Association for Pelvic Organ Prolapse Support), nearly 50% women suffer from POP and on an average 40-70% women tend to experience SUI, worldwide. Around one third of total POP-affected patients undergo multiple surgeries globally, whereas thousands of them happen only in the US, each year.

One of the surgical/invasive methods involved in the treatment of pelvic organ ailments includes insertion of female pelvic implants, such as vaginal mesh implants, vaginal grafts, and vaginal stings and tapes. A recently conducted study by Persistence Market Research positions the global pelvic implants market at around US$ 230 Mn. With the current scenario and a growing number of scandals involving pelvic implants, the market is already experiencing a drastic downfall that is likely to take the market on the verge of a complete decline.

Procedural failures reported since the recent past have been a major challenge in the market growth and will remain a longstanding barrier over the next few years. Due to traumatic complications associated with the vaginal implants surgery and the side effects experienced by thousands of patients, the demand for pelvic implants will continue to curtail considerably in near future. The NHS data indicates that a majority women who opted for pelvic implants earlier had to undergo another surgery for removing those implants owing to a number of complications and post-surgical effects.

People and industry experts are thus losing interest and trust in pelvic implants, however, non-availability of a successful treatment alternative compels surgeons to still go for pelvic implants procedure over traditional reconstructive surgery due to the proven high cure rates of the former. Establishment of the clinical efficiency and safety of pelvic implants is currently being worked on, and manufacturers are anticipated to succeed by submitting safety data requirements and obtaining pre-market approvals.

Although the market is presumed to move further at a sluggish pace, vaginal slings are expected to be the most sought after implants. These implants are made up of a narrow polypropylene mesh tape and are placed as slings or hammocks in order to maintain the proper position of urethra. While vaginal slings have been here for a couple of decades now, their popularity is attributed to minimal invasion and quick surgical procedure. Another relatively attractive segment in the global pelvic implants market includes vaginal grafts.

China and North America are seen to be the key regions representing relatively higher sales of pelvic implants. Globally, leading manufacturers have till date encountered with more than 650 lawsuits, especially in Australia, which allegedly portray these implants as painful devices causing serious internal injuries. While some of the key players have already chosen to exit the pelvic implants industry, others could hopefully rise, if come with the necessary safety requirements and approvals.
